ROX 2003 - ONE NIGHT STAND

Rox 2003 finally took place at The Venue in Chichester on 20/9/03, in the first of a planned series of ‘one night stands’. The first half of the evening featured the teenage talents of Stereofish, Trip and contest winners Idesyne, as well as junior sensations Golden Boulder who were surrounded by a media frenzy of Beckhamesque proportions - all testament to what Rox and the South Coast scene is doing for young bands, giving them opportunities to showcase and develop their obvious talents. After that Ticklin The Pickle provided some funkalicious sounds that got the crowd grooving; Mosaic played a set of trancey, spacey, mellow vibes; Cutlass provided something for the rock fan with their heavy groove and Johnny 4 concluded the night with some superior indie rock. In the dance room, the Reform DJs delivered seamless swathes of pumping underground house, while impressive laser lights cut through the smoke and UV rays lit up Reform backdrops and t-shirts. The crowd were treated to a succession of quality bands, varied music and a good production - and all at a reasonable price. Chichester desperately needs events like these, the area is teaming with talent and this is not necessarily matched by the opportunities for exposure - this is what organisations such as Rox are trying to address.

GREAT GEAR IS HERE and THE JOINS LAST SHOW

A collection of the areas foremost acoustic artists (including Alex Roberts, Lewis & Ash, Tim Fox and Sgt Geall) have teamed up with Unknown and Abnamation to produce a limited edition t-shirt and CD and they will be showcasing their wares at Woodies on 2/11. The Join and SpaceBaby have also followed suit and their goods will be available when they play the Cave, St Pancras, Chi at a special spooky Hello’ween party on 31/10. The Join’s last show, at what is fast becoming Chichester’s prime music venue, was a wild and entertaining evening with the band coming across as somewhere between Radiohead, Motorhead and Status Quo!

GOLDEN SECTION - flotation EP

A new band with a home recorded 4 track EP that displays plenty of ideas. From guitar led rock with a hint of My Bloody Valentine, to retro 80’s synth pop, with touches of Human League and Gary Numan and ending with a mellow acoustic number. Shows real potential.

MORIARTY - Reinvention EP

A kind of Americanised nu-metal/heavy riff type thing. Its all blazing guitars and quick fire rasping vocals. You can tell that the guys can play their instruments well and the potential is there, but as is often the case with early demo recordings, the whole thing is let down by the quality of the sound - there is no beef! Sound like they’d be good live - but need to get a better recording.

CYMBIOTIC - Since Day One Its Been All Or Nothing EP

These guys are well angry! Do they always scream and head butt their guitars like this? It’s quite cool cos they do pull it off, the bass is like a pneumatic drill and the guitars sound like machine guns shooting at the lead singer who is on steroids and strangling a cat to death. Or something. It goes from Napalm Death to Metallica and always sounds like they mean it, not the sort of thing you’d play if you had a headache, but next time you feel your parents don’t understand you.

UNKNOWN PROMOTIONS REVIEW

On 5/10/03 Hope of the States debut single for Sony records went straight into the National Chart at number 25. ‘Enemies/Friends’ is an epic pop song, rockier and more up-tempo than their previous efforts. Driven by a military beat, soaring strings and passionate guitars it also features a great vocal awash with their trademark American civil war imagery, and a quality video of real time footage mixed with animation. A Top Of The Pops performance capped a meteoric rise for the band during the last year and provides tangible inspiration for all aspiring musicians in the area. Their debut album for Sony follows next year.
