A Quiet Night In

NARC - Cert 18 – release date Monday 1st September

vidtuxedo Detroit narcotic detective Nick Tellis (Jason Patric) is assigned to help fellow detective Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) in the investigation of the murder of Oak’s partner, Calvess. Tellis reluctantly takes the job, which offers the chance of reinstatement after his suspension for shooting a bystander while pursuing a suspect. With a wife and baby to support, the prospect of going back on the street is bad enough, but being partnered with the unscrupulous Oak, who resorts to any means available - usually violent - to secure a conviction, only compounds matters. Both men’s wilful independence and differing methods make for an uneasy alliance. Tellis is keen to resolve the case and return to the security of a desk job while Oak’s reasons are a little more personal.

JUNGLE BOOK 2 - Certificate U – release date Monday 8th September

vidtuxedo Mowgli now lives in a village with his new parents and his brother and is slowly adjusting to life away from the jungle and living with other humans. When he goes to visit his old friend, Baloo the bear, Mowgli is keen stay for a while. However Mowgli and Baloo soon encounter Shere Khan who has a score to settle...

After a delightful opening, jungle boy Mowgli (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) recaps much of the original story. After his old pal Baloo the bear (now voiced by John Goodman) draws Mowgli away from the man-village, with all its work and rules, and back into the glorious indolence of the jungle, the movie repeats an encounter with Kaa the snake, the cockney vultures, a musical number at the monkey’s palace, the menace of Shere Khan the tiger, and even the song “The Bare Necessities”.

MAID IN MANHATTEN - Cert PG – release date Monday 15th September

vidtuxedo Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez), a maid in a top class Manhattan hotel, chances to dress in a guest’s clothes just when handsome political candidate Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) walks in. Christopher is mistaken in thinking that she is actually a guest at the hotel. Naturally, he’s bowled over and pursues her, and the pair shares a magical romantic night together. He’s initially drawn to her gorgeous good looks but soon comes to appreciate her honesty and common sense. Of course, she can’t let him know that she’s only a maid, and various high jinks ensue; lurking in the edges of this glossy romance are a wealth of sly turns by Natasha Richardson and Amy Sedaris, Bob Hoskins, Stanley Tucci, and many other familiar faces. He finally realises the truth but can they overcome their differences.

CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND - Cert 15 – release Monday 22nd Sept

vidtuxedo Showbiz autobiographies don’t come any stranger than Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. A memoir by Chuck Barris, the mastermind behind The Dating Game (the format we know as Blind Date) and The Gong Show—which interweaves a fairly straight account of his toils in the television industry with outrageous fictions about his secret life as a CIA hit-man. First-time director George Clooney takes Barris’s bizarre book and makes an extraordinary picture, with an awards-quality performance from Sam Rockwell as Barris. Clooney takes the secondary role of Barris’s enigmatic boss, and of the countless women the hero is involved with along the way, the two most important are the ever-supportive Penny (Drew Barrymore) and an agent creeping in the same cloak-and-dagger circles (Julia Roberts). Priceless tiny gags include: a silent Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as contestants of The Dating Game and Barris coming up with the idea for a TV quiz show while half-listening to a CIA instructor explaining torture techniques.
