CHICAGO - Certificate 12A release date Monday 4th August
A peek at murder and the criminal justice system in 1920s Chicago, filled with music and dance numbers? Chicago is the story of two female murderesses, Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger), and their struggles for the attention of a manipulative ace lawyer, Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), media attention, and ultimately their release from prison. It takes an unflinchingly cynical view of the criminal justice system, how lawyers and criminals manipulate the truth, and the role of the media.
Unhappily married Roxie Hart succumbs easily to the promises of show-business connections fed to her by furniture salesman Fred Casely (Dominic West). When Roxie learns Fred has been lying to her, she shoots him in a rage. All too soon she joins notorious murderess and stage star Velma Kelly in prison, to await trial.
Chicago is one of the years most entertaining films and is a representation of how the musical can again fit in modern cinema.

JOHNNY ENGLISH - Certificate PG release date Monday 11th August
On the face of it, Johnny English is a James Bond spoof, although it originated as a series of TV commercials Rowan Atkinson did for Barclaycard. The clumsy secret agent who makes disastrous decisions, breaks into the wrong buildings, carries a gun that falls apart when fired and climbs up a sewage pipe at the busiest time of the morning cannot fail to amuse.
Johnny English is not a complete moron. Hes accident prone. Hes a fool, rather than a friend, which makes a difference in the spy game.
There are two surprise pleasures. Australian pop singer Natalie Imbruglia plays the English version of a Bond babe. Shes very good at it. In fact, she has personality to burn and rides a mean motor bike, not to mention displaying kick boxing skills that should encourage Jackie Chan to take down her number. Shes a looker, too, and, like Kylie, an Old Neighbourian. |
