A Quiet Night In

THE TUXEDO - Certificate 12 – release date Mon 7th July

vidtuxedo A hapless chauffeur is catapulted into a world of espionage and intrigue when he discovers a secret agent’s gadget-laden tuxedo.
The gimmick in Kevin Donovan’s film is a James Bond-style dinner jacket that conceals more hi-tech gadgets than a dozen Q Branches. The monkey suit belongs to super spy Clark Devlin (Jason Isaacs), but when he is injured it falls to his chauffeur Jimmy Tong (Jackie Chan) to pick up where he left off.
That means joining forces with rookie CSA agent Del Blaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt), thwarting a billionaire and his plan to take over the world’s water supply - and, of course, donning Devlin’s prized tuxedo.
CITY BY THE SEA - Certificate 15 – release date Mon 14th July
Based on a true story (from an article in Esquire), the film stars DeNiro as Vincent La Marca, a cop who has distanced himself from his shameful past (his Dad was a convicted child murderer, he assaulted his wife and deserted his family 14 years previously) and is trying to make a go of his relationship with new girlfriend Michelle (Frances McDormand).
These efforts are severely hampered, however, when DeNiro’s estranged son Joey (James Franco) becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation - not least because La Marca hasn’t actually told Michelle that he has a son.
The ‘City’ of the title refers to Long Beach - a beachside community near Manhattan that was once thriving and is now run-down and desolate. As such, the film benefits considerably from some great location work that conveys the bleakness of Franco’s predicament.
SOLARIS - Certificate 15 – release date Mon 21st July
In the movie Clooney plays Chris Kelvin, a psychiatrist who is called upon to investigate strange events happening on a space station orbiting the ocean planet of Solaris. Arriving at the station Kelvin is confronted by the remains of the crew who are experiencing unusual visions and its not long before Kelvin starts seeing the physical embodiment of past memories himself.
By the time we find out why he may have felt that way, the old friend has taken his own life, Clooney has boarded a vast ghost town of a vessel and, in flashback, his character is revealed to have loved and lost a beautiful, troubled woman played by Natascha McElhone. Her death, followed a fight between the two and, because of that fact, Clooney’s character is afflicted by a crippling sense of guilt and regret.
On board he encounters the crew’s two survivors. Both are evasive on the subjects of what’s been happening and why they haven’t turned around and headed for home. In essence, they assure him he’ll find out for himself soon enough and leave him to spend his first night on the ship. In his dreams, he and McElhone reenact fragments of their life together. When he awakens, however, she’s still there.
As it turns out, everyone on the craft has been having visitors ever since the station settled into position high above Solaris. Crewmembers can only speculate as to the purpose of these unsettling incarnations. One thing on which all agree, though, is the fact that their guests aren’t human, much less are they the actual people they appear to be.
FINAL DESTINATION 2 - Certificate 18 – release date Mon 28th July
When the survivors of a terrible car crash start to die in mysterious circumstances they start to realise that Death will not be cheated.
Exactly a year after the plane crash of the first movie, a cute lead (a girl this time) has a premonition while in a car with her friends waiting to join the freeway.
Interestingly, the premonition involves a scene of a horribly gruesome multi-car pile-up. Understandably freaked out, she pulls over, blocking the lane and thereby saving the lives of all those waiting in the cars behind her.
The survivors quickly figure out that they have cheated Death, though they are all familiar with the events of the first film. And, sure enough, when Death claims a couple of them in the order in which they would have died in the accident, the rest of them figure out what’s going on and try to stay one step ahead of the Reaper.
They are helped by Clear Rivers (Ali Larter), the only survivor from the first film, and they also drop in on Tony Todd (whose cameo in the first film was a creepy highlight).
